Amy

Amy Mercado is taking life’s lessons and putting them to good use by preparing to work for neighbors and friends in District 35. Public service has been a strong influence on her commitment to helping people. Amy worked hard to acquire her education while raising her children, caring for her ailing grandparents and working full time. She graduated from American Intercontinental University with Cum Laude honors and received a B.A. in Business Administration, with a concentration in Management.

She understands the importance of discipline and was taught as much by her parents, Carmen Torres, a New York City Police Officer, and Victor M. Torres, a New York City Transit Police Detective.

Amy has built a strong reputation as a dependable and diplomatic political activist in several community organizations and grassroots efforts throughout the State of Florida.

Amy has been listening and learning from the people of the district because she knows they are faced with the same challenges her family faces each day. “I am not a professional politician. I but I am a mother, a wife and a daughter who shares the daily struggle of meeting the needs of my family and community every day. I talk to people. I know we have to get the economy going, create jobs and improve our schools. We have to do it. We have to put people before politics.”

Amy is the current President of the Orange County Democratic Hispanic Caucus, Past Secretary of the Labor Council for Latin American Advancements Central Florida Chapter, and Past Secretary of the Florida Council of the League of United Latin American Citizens. In addition, she is a member of the Orange County Chapter of the Florida Voters League, the Florida Democratic Party’s Central/State Executive Committee and its Affirmative Action Committee.

Amy was one of the original members of Orlando 4 Obama and campaigned tirelessly for then Senator Obama and several local candidates during the 2008 election cycle. Amy was honored to be appointed as one of Senator Obama’s Florida Delegates and attended the Democratic National Convention with her mother who was an elected Delegate. In December 2008, Amy accompanied her mother, a Florida Elector, to Tallahassee to cast her Electoral vote.

Amy and Wilfredo "Fred" Mercado were married and united their blended family in 1997. Their children are proud students of the Orange County Public School System. Amy and her husband are members of Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Winter Park.
